Revolut: the spread business

Or how a “free” service actually gets paid for through the back door.

First newsletter after a summer that I hope was a good one for you. To kick off the year, here is a little investigation I have been running over the past few months on Revolut, the biggest of the neobanks.

This summer, plenty of people relied on this kind of bank because it makes managing money abroad simple, especially spending in foreign currencies or converting cash on the cheap. It is one of the brand’s flagship selling points, too: a few days ago it asked its Instagram followers: “Where have you taken your Revolut card this summer?”.

To convince users to switch to a paid account, Revolut offers them a whole raft of so-called free or included services. But are they really?

(OK, if I’m asking, you know the answer, but read on anyway)

You can also make a donation here. Give what you like, and best of all there’s no Substack taking 10% and no Stripe taking 3% 😅.
