Rules for the good of the game

And yet, and yet, as the old song goes, regulating the cash has a point: the show. PSG have won 9 of the last 11 French titles. In their day, Lyon won 7 in a row. Same story in Germany or Spain. Slightly less dire in Italy or England. But overall: the show is pretty thin.

Not so in the major American leagues over the last 10 seasons:

  • NFL: 7 different winners
  • MLS: 10
  • NBA: 8
  • NHL: 8
  • MLB: 8

In short: there’s real competition. Why? The rules are strict and designed for the show. Nobody can accuse the United States of being anti-free-market or anti-capitalist. But the salary cap, the trades and even playing time have been designed to keep things interesting day in, day out.

The model is surely not without its flaws: but for once, it manages to combine money with the common good. At the price, though, of players who are no longer masters of their own fate.
