Mirror of Eorzea

A video game could have reinvented everything. Forgotten the constraints of the real world, abolished scarcity, given everyone limitless space. After all, in a digital world, nothing says a plot has to be fought over, a house has to be a luxury, a district has to be full. Space is a setting, not a resource. Final Fantasy XIV could have gone for simplicity. It chose another path.

In a universe where everything could be cloned effortlessly, owning a house has become a privilege. But it isn’t just about space. It’s about value. FFXIV didn’t simply limit supply: it created a positional good, an object of social distinction. A house isn’t just scenery, it’s status. A marker of belonging. A goal to reach. A dream, too, for those left on the doorstep.

And that is precisely what gives the experience its texture. This shortage doesn’t only fuel speculation: it generates stories. The house that becomes a speakeasy for regulars. The Free Company that buys a mansion and turns it into a cabaret. The districts that forge their own identity, somewhere between well-heeled enclave and buccaneers’ den. Scarcity creates tension, and that tension drives the game.

It could have gone differently. Other virtual worlds chose abundance, universal access, profusion. But would a house obtained without effort have had the same value? Would it have stirred up the same tensions, the same alliances, the same battles? In a market, whether made of bricks or pixels, every asset becomes a wall. A threshold to cross. A filter between those who have and those who aspire to have.

Final Fantasy XIV holds up a mirror to those who live in it. It reminds us that property, even virtual, is more than four walls: it’s a story we write for ourselves, an anchor in a moving world, a space where our own social dynamics play out all over again.

Space was infinite. And yet walls went up. On purpose.
